This may seem a strange page but the official records and newspaper reports indicate that everyone assumed her name was LOUISA. The record of her birth shows her full name as Louisa Caroline Alberta Guelph.

The reports of her Christening all name her as LOUISA.

I assume that this was how her name was pronounced by the predominantly German staff and family and accordingly anyone hearing her name, recorded it as it sounded. You will note that the Princess Royal’s name is also Louisa and not Louise. However Louise was in no doubt how her name was spelt as can be seen in the letter written by her in 1855 at Buckingham Palace, although she did lapse into French for the month.

and again in 1857 and 1859 when she wrote to ‘Dearest Grandmama’

The quality of Louise’s handwriting at 7 , 9 and 11 is of a higher quality than many subsequent letters
